Celebrating our Food Contributors

8/15/25 - How much do YOU know about our food donors?

This month, Keep Austin Fed is celebrating the many businesses that donate their surplus food to the community. Our food contributors differ in size and industry, but they are united in their desire to nourish their neighbors and to reduce organizational food waste.

Keep Austin Fed’s largest food donor category, by number of businesses, is restaurants. This category includes not only traditional restaurants but also cafes, coffee shops, and caterers. Restaurants provide delicious, high-quality meals that require minimal work to prepare. Donations from restaurants are particularly beneficial for community members who don’t have the space or ability to cook and for housing complexes that need to feed large groups of people.

Keep Austin Fed receives their largest volume of food from grocery stores that primarily donate fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, and eggs. Grocery store donations provide a variety of food that gives individuals choice and grant our neighbors the freedom to create and prepare their own meals. The surplus food donated by grocery stores also benefits our nonprofit partner organizations that prepare fresh meals every day for the communities they serve.

Many corporate offices in Austin offer a cafeteria for their employees and guests. Throughout the week, these cafeterias donate surplus food back to the community. These donations supply bulk prepared foods and grab-n-go meals that community members are able to store and enjoy for days to come.

No matter the source, donated food makes a meaningful difference. It brings dignity, choice, and nourishment to our neighbors while keeping perfectly good food out of the landfill. Keep Austin Fed is proud to partner with our dedicated food donors to provide a simple, impactful way for businesses to fight both food waste and food insecurity in our city.
