JOB TYPE: Full Time (40 hrs/week), Austin based in person, Monday – Friday, 7-4 or 8-5, some weekend and evening work may be required.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: Keep Austin Fed is a food rescue non-profit organization with a mission to reduce hunger and help the environment by connecting surplus food with our neighbors in need. Keep Austin Fed picks up unserved and unsold wholesome food from retailers, distributors, caterers, and other food permitted businesses. and delivers it for free to other charitable food distribution sites (soup kitchens, low-income housing complexes, shelters, transitional housing, etc.). POSITION SUMMARY: Keep Austin Fed is seeking an Operations Assistant who is passionate about food security and food justice. This job entails collecting, loading, and transporting food items from various food donation partners throughout Austin using a company van (and occasionally your own vehicle) and delivering these goods to designated charity recipients or cooler hubs. You will also oversee the culling, sorting, and organization of food donations at our hubs and lead managed community giveaways/mobile markets. Additionally, you’ll assist in collecting impact data for reporting purposes.

You’ll join a devoted team of staff and volunteers who create a fulfilling work environment. Please note that this role involves physically demanding tasks, including lifting boxes of food weighing up to 45 pounds repeatedly and getting in and out of vans. Additionally, expect to stand for extended periods – up to 2 hours – during hub activities. You will be working mostly outside during hot and cold temperatures, and sometimes in the rain, with some shelter provided.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

●       Food Rescue and Distirbution: Collect food from participating food contributors (distributors, retailers, etc.) and deliver promptly to designated sites according to the schedule, which is subject to modifications throughout the day, and record weights offs in our impact tracking system, either through a phone app or computer web browser. Conduct managed community food giveaways and lead hub operations, as set on schedule. Communicate with partner organizations for “on demand” rescue and distributions as required.

●       Hub Operation: Ensure that the products being donated follow food safety guidelines, and compost or refuse donations if the product doesn't meet stated criteria. (We will provide food safety certification training if you are not already certified.) You will also be responsible for managing volunteers at the hubs, accommodating (or not) “walk-up recipients” as appropriate, and keeping the area clean and organized.

●       Van Driver: Follow all TXDOT and company regulations as they relate to company vehicles and general safety. Maintain the vehicle’s cleanliness, including getting it washed periodically. Practice safe and lawful driving and parking at all times.

●       Additional responsibilities may be added as skills and availability allow.

QUALIFICATIONS:

●       Must have valid Texas driver’s license, submit to a Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) check, and have a 5-year satisfactory driving record**

●       Ability to safely drive a large, heavy van.

●       Ability to repeatedly lift boxes and other objects up to 45 pounds.

●       Knowledge with computers, Google Docs, spreadsheets, and smartphone technology

●       Ability to be flexible to variable situations.

●       Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse groups.

** Driving record must pass the following checks:

  • Drivers must have a valid TX driver’s license.

  • In the past three years, drivers should have no more than:

    • One At-Fault Accidents

    • Three Minor Moving Violations (personal and/or business)

    • Four Non-Moving Violations such as: Failure to Appear, License Not In Possession, or Driving Without Proof of Insurance/Registration
